This project was part of NYU’s Tish of the Arts 2019 Opera-Lab Projects, co-directed by Randel Eng & Sam Helfrich. The operas where created in NYU Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program’s Advanced Opera Lab. Directed by Sam Helfrich and students from The New School’s College of Performing Arts. Theatrical design by students from NYU/Tisch Department of Design for Stage and Film. Choreography by students from the NYU/Tisch Department of Dance. And performed by professional opera singers from The American Opera Projects. The 2019 series consisted of four operas, each of them of 30 minutes of duration.

World premiere on May 18, 2019 at the Shubert Theatre at NYU and May 19 & 20, 2019 at The Stonewall Inn.

About the Outside:

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, in another bar somewhere else in the Village, a young man struggles with a pair of intertwined decisions: how to live as his authentic self and whether or not to go outside and join a revolution that has been drawing ever closer.
